I have some exciting news to share with you today: we are hiring!
We are looking to hire two writers and one virtual assistant.
If you are not familiar with Young Adult Money (and even if you are) consider reading through our start here page. We are focused on helping people make more, save more, and live better. We are also very much focused on the millennial demographic.
We will start by talking about the open positions for writers and then address the virtual assistant opening.
UPDATE: We have hired two writers, but are still looking for a Virtual Assistant, especially one that has experience managing Pinterest using TailWind. See the rest of the requirements below.
Writers Needed
We’ve had a number of contributors over the year and due to recent changes we have a need for two additional writers. These contributors will be responsible for contributing one blog post a week.
Anyone who has hired and onboarded someone knows that it can be time-consuming going through the onboarding process. My goal with contributors is for them to stay with Young Adult Money long-term and become more comfortable over time with the type of content, topics, and requirements we have.
Here are some general requirements for weekly blog posts that will be submitted:
- At least 700 words, though 1,000+ is ideal
- Link to multiple relevant previously published posts on Young Adult Money
- HTML formatting consistent with other posts on the site – this is something that will take a while to get used to, but ultimately I would like the editor to have to spend no time at all editing HTML of posts
- Add/Choose appropriate categories and tags for post
- Populate SEO title/description/keywords
- Populate Pinterest description
- Submit post by deadline
- Respond/engage with reader comments (ideally same day post is published)
One thing I want to be clear about is that I’m looking for writers to pitch their own blog posts. I’m looking to save time on my end so it is counter-productive for me to brainstorm posts for writers. I typically accept 30-40% of posts that are pitched which means that writers will need to be comfortable pitching 10-15 blog posts a month (and writing on average 4 of those topics).
If you want to see the format and type of posts I’m looking for it may be worth reading some of Erin’s posts.
Writers do not have to submit graphics with their posts. I am looking for writers who have a social media presence and would regularly share their post on Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook.
If you are interested in contributing to Young Adult Money as a writer please send an email to DC @ YoungAdultMoney.com with the subject line “Writer Needed” and answer the following questions:
- Why do you want to contribute to Young Adult Money?
- What relevant work experience do you have?
- What is your experience with blogging specifically (if not answered in previous question)?
- What knowledge/experience do you have in the personal finance, millennial, and lifestyle niches?
- Include links to 3 of your published blog posts.
- Would you be interested in helping with partner content? These typically are reviews/features of products or services. This would be on top of the regular one post a week.
- What kind of social media presence do you have? In particular I’m curious how active you are on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Would you be willing to share posts you write for Young Adult Money across your social networks?
- What is your rate per post (keeping in mind the list of requirements shared earlier)?
If you have any questions do not hesitate to include those in the email or in the comments below. My goal is to have writers complete a three-post trial period where we can both decide whether it’s a good fit for us.
Virtual Assistant Needed
I am also looking for a virtual assistant who can help with some of the back-end work on the site. In particular I am looking for someone with experience managing social media accounts, especially Pinterest.
Things that I would like the VA to work on from the get-go:
- Scheduling Pinterest Pins on group boards via Tailwind
- Create and update a spreadsheet that lists out group boards we are a part of and their rules
- Seek out new group boards for us to be a part of and apply to group boards
- Manage/Clean up/Improve our Pinterest boards
- Regularly pin to our top Pinterest boards – delete old/duplicate pins
Other Social Media
- Schedule Twitter posts via Buffer
- Schedule Twitter updates for new posts going up over the upcoming week
- Regularly post to our Facebook page
There are a number of other things that the VA could work on down the road:
- Maintain and update spreadsheets that track a variety of things
- Schedule Tweets for my personal account @DavidCarlson1
- Format and prepare the weekly email newsletter
- Update and track financials
- Respond to emails and determine which emails I need to read/respond to
- Participate in Tweet Chats on behalf of Young Adult Money
- Research & apply to affiliate programs
- Seek out companies/contacts for partner content
- Go through old posts and update formatting, affiliate links, etc.
Pay will be approximately $10/hour with opportunities to make more based on performance/experience. This is a great opportunity for someone to make some extra money in their free time.
Time will need to be tracked via a spreadsheet with a description of what was worked on/accomplished. I’m really looking for someone who can save me a significant amount of time long-term so that I can focus on business development activities.
VA must be willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).

Good luck finding additional writers and a virtual assistant.
I got a chance to listen to your interview on the Money Girl podcast. I like how you break down side hustles into the different groups and give people a list of things to consider before starting a side hustle. Hopefully that episode yields more book sales for you!

Thanks Aliyyah! I have already received some solid applicants so I’m looking forward to going through them all this weekend and deciding who to go with.
I’m glad you enjoyed the Money Girl podcast. Side hustles can vary drastically so I always think it’s a good idea to segment them.
