New kitchen! Just kidding, I can dream tho, right? ;)
Welcome to the Weekly Quick Hits Roundup! Every week I write a weekly wrap-up of things that were going on here at Young Adult Money, a few personal updates/thoughts, and finally a few posts I read this week that I thought were worth sharing.
We also have our giveaway roundup every Friday. This Friday there are over 150 giveaways listed that end today (10/11) through next Thursday (10/17).
Below are the posts we published this week:
- On Monday Sally shared about work/life balance in I Used to Work 30+ Hours a Week in High School. I used to work anywhere from 10-25 hours a week during school (that’s during school, not Summer) and I really can’t imagine working 30 hours a week consistently. Definitely requires a great work ethic, to say the least.
- On Tuesday we announced our latest giveaway in October Halloween $660 Cash Giveaway. It runs through October 31st, so make sure you get your entries in.
- On Wednesday Cat explained Why I Rent An Old Car For $500 A Month. Could you imagine paying $500 a month for a 15+ year old car?
- On Thursday one of my blogging buddies, “Average Joe,” asked How Do You Stack Up To People Your Age Financially? Joe is a financial advisor so he’s dealt with clients in a wide variety of different financial situations. Definitely worth a read.
Update Time
- Workout Goal – As I’ve mentioned in the past, I set a goal of running 3 miles a day, four days a week, for three weeks. This is my third week and the runs were ironically more difficult than they were the first two weeks.
On a side note, I would really like to add strength training to my workout plan. While I have done strength training in the past, I have never made a solid plan or stuck with it for a long period of time. If you know of any good websites that help you make strength training workout plans I would love to hear about them.
- New Side Project – I mentioned it in the past, but there is another website that I have been planning on starting for quite some time now. I think I’ve owned the domain for nearly two years. I got coffee with a friend on Wednesday night and we were discussing our respective small businesses/side hustles and I shared my new idea with him. Just talking about it got me excited, as well as his positive reaction to the idea including my plan for monetizing it.
While I certainly love putting time, energy, and money into Young Adult Money, I think I need to at least get the site launched sometime in the near future. I plan on launching the site in January 2014. I know some of you read that and think “why the heck don’t you just start it this weekend and slowly work on it?” or “that’s not the near future!” The answer is that I know once it’s live I will obsessively want to work on it, and my current schedule just won’t allow it. Additionally, I usually spend over a year thinking/planning a site before committing to it because I don’t want to half-ass it.
It’s nice to nail down a “launch” date, though, and I’m much more likely to actually get the site up and running now that I set a date.
- Weekend – I only have two solid plans so far this weekend. On Saturday a friend is coming over to trim our trees as well as cut down our apple tree. We have a huge oak tree in our front yard that is in desperate need of trimming, so I’m excited for the job to be done before the Winter.
The other big thing I have planned is a date with my wife on Saturday night. We are both so busy during the week (and the weekends) that we rarely go on dates, so it’ll be good to finally go on one.
Posts of the Week:
In case anyone hasn’t figured it out, I typically read posts from bloggers who comment on our site. It’s not that I don’t enjoy people’s posts that do not comment on our site, but with so many blogs out there it’s important to prioritize the ones you read. So if you want to see your post here, keep on commenting on our posts throughout the week.
- Jefferson from See Debt Run shared about his experience losing weight in See Scale Run.
- Micro Missions asked Amazon Prime Review – Are the benefits worth the price?. This is something I’ve thought about quite a bit in the past!
- Kim from Kari from Student Debt Survivor talked about bathroom attendants in Pay to Pee?. Glad I’m not the only one who find the concept of bathroom attendants strange.
- Stefanie from The Broke and Beautiful Life shared Money Manners: Property Damage.
- Mrs. Frugal Rules from Frugal Rules talks about watching her husband go from hating his job to taking the plunge into self-employment/small biz ownership in Taking the Plunge: The Day I Finally Said, ‘ Quit Your Job’.
Anything fun planned for the weekend? Have you finished your Christmas shopping (I kid!)? Any goals for the rest of the year? I love to hear what’s going on in your life!

I think it’s actually pretty normal for a workout routine to feel easier at the start, when you’re still excited about it. Once it gets routine some of the novelty wears off and it can start feeling tiring. Stick with it and you’ll be fine. On another note, I like that you set a goal a little ways off. I’ve considered starting another site as well and I would definitely like to do it with a bang with lots of content and marketing opportunities all ready to go, so this gives you some time to handle all of that.
DC @ Young Adult Money says
Matt @ Mom and Dad MoneyVery true. All workouts are exciting at the beginning but it really does start to become more of a grind after a couple weeks. Sinus infections don’t help ;)
At minimum when I start my site I’d want to have social media set up, posts published, and generally just have a solid game plan so it can start on the right foot. There is something to be said about starting a site and improving/figuring it out as you go, but since I already have one active I don’t want to put myself in a situation where I feel committed to posting 3x/week on one site and 5x/week on the other while also doing all sorts of logistical things.

I think it’s great you’re taking such care in planning out the next site, and that you know your limits with working on both. As for strength training, I have read that Starting Strength is a pretty good program. There was another site I once stumbled upon that just had exercises and guides but I don’t remember what it was called. If I come across it again I will let you know! This weekend I actually get a three day weekend, so I’m just going to relax and possibly take a day trip to the mountains with my boyfriend on Monday.
DC @ Young Adult Money says
JourneytoSavingI would definitely be interested in hearing about that site if you ever stumble upon it again. Visiting the mountains sounds great, unfortunately for me I’m about 12 hours away from either mountain range so I don’t get to do it often haha. Enjoy your three day weekend!

I can’t wait until I hear more about your new site. WOOHOO! :)
Have an awesome weekend!
DC @ Young Adult Money says
SenseofCentsI appreciate your enthusiasm! It’s in a totally different niche but it’s something I’m passionate about so I’m excited to start it.
FrugalRules says
Very cool on the new site DC. I have been thinking about it more myself and really want to go that direction as well. I think being patient with it is good as well so you have time to put your plan of attack together. Our plans for the weekend is work and more work. We’ve been swamped with it lately and with us being at FinCon next week we’ll be losing out on time to do it. We’re going to try and get in some time with the kids as well since they’ll be staying home. Thanks so much for the mention, have a great weekend!
DC @ Young Adult Money says
FrugalRulesAh yes Fincon! I almost forgot about it since I’m not going, but I can only imagine how much work it is to clear your schedule for it. I will have a four day weekend next weekend and I will spend it taking care of my wife as she gets her wisdom teeth out. Planning on getting a TON of blog work done during that time and trying to not be too jealous of everyone at Fincon ;)

Can’t wait for your new site DC!
DC @ Young Adult Money says
LisaVsTheLoans Thanks Lisa! I appreciate your excitement : )
MicrosMissions says
Thanks for the shout out. Good luck on the new site. I have no idea how you have the time and energy to maintain one site and plan another. I feel like it’s hard work just with one.
DC @ Young Adult Money says
MicrosMissions Maintaining one site is a ton of work, but I do have two writers now and my wife essentially puts together the Friday giveaway post, so I should have a bit more time…hopefully just enough to start a second one. I mainly want to diversify my online assets and income streams, so hopefully this second site will be a nice addition.
Charles@gettingarichlife says
Hey David,
Have you thought of doing P90x. It’s a home workout and I got more results from that than years of working out in a gym.
DC @ Young Adult Money says
Charles@gettingarichlife I’ve heard of P90x, but one thing I worry about with that is that I won’t end up sticking with it long-term. It may be too intense or too much time commitment, etc. It probably doesn’t hurt to try it, but for now I’d rather try to make it work without going on a program like P90x.
Beachbudget says
You’re one busy guy! Enjoy your date night tonight with your wife!
DC @ Young Adult Money says
Beachbudget I may be a little TOO busy so I’m hesitant about the site, but I think it’s important to move forward with it now or I might never start it. Thanks and hope you have a great weekend!
Money Life and More says
Good luck with the new side project! That kitchen does look awesome, but I don’t think I’d want to pay for it!
DC @ Young Adult Money says
Money Life and More Thanks man!
Suburban Finance says
Good luck with your new site. I don’t think that Jan 2014 is a bad goal. After all, it has to be timely and realistic, and it looks like you hit both.
