I’ve partnered with Rotary in their campaign to End Polio. Today I want to share their ‘World’s Biggest Commercial’ campaign.
I recently uploaded my picture to join the over 90,000 people in over 170 countries who have participated in the ‘World’s Biggest Commercial’ to help raise awareness about Polio and ultimately to end Polio.
So you’re probably wondering: What the heck is the world’s biggest commercial?
You can read more about it at this link, but here’s a good summary:
More than 90,000 people from 170 countries have added their photo to Rotary’s World’s Biggest Commercial, a digital campaign to support the fight to end polio. Celebrities and others across the globe uploaded a photo of themselves doing the “this close” pose to the campaign website. Each photo was added to an ever-expanding online web-based video with the likes of notable figures including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Bill Gates, Archie Panjabi, Jackie Chan and others. The resulting video has grown to over three hours long!
Earlier I headed over to the World’s Biggest commercial campaign website and saw none other than Bill Gates. If you weren’t aware, Bill Gates has been a key player in the End Polio Now campaign and has generously volunteered resources to help the effort.
You don’t have to be Bill Gates to participate, though. You can do simple things like uploading your photo to help raise awareness, donate money to the End Polio Now campaign, or just share social media statuses related to polio. You’d be amazed how few know that polio still exists, as it hasn’t impacted the developed world for quite some time. It’s hard to believe, but we are so close to eradicating the 2nd human disease in history.
This week is World Immunization Week. Here are a couple facts that you may find interesting related to immunizations and Rotary’s efforts:
- Polio cases have been reduced by 99% worldwide due to immunization efforts by Rotary and its partners
- India is polio-free due to immunization efforts by Rotary and its partners
I encourage you to participate in any way you see fit, but I highly recommend uploading your photo for the World’s Biggest Commercial. Head here for more information.
As a kid, one of my friends had polio. Today, you rarely see it, but in the 60s, it was common. There are a few older folks out there that I meet once in a while with the effects of polio. It is a bad disease, that killed and crippled a lot of people.
No Nonsense Landlord Definitely a terrible disease. Hopefully we can eradicated it within the next few years.
My ex-boyfriend’s dad had polio as a child, and thankfully survived. It’s a horrible horrible disease, that can (and should) be prevented. Headed over to check out the campaign.
