Want to earn some extra money on the side with the help of your smartphone?
Side hustle apps are a popular way for people to make money without having to adjust their schedule. Plus, apps make it easier to find clients and don’t require as much upfront costs as starting your own business.
Anyone can start making money today with the help of these 7 apps.
1) Drive for a Ride Sharing Service
Driving for ride sharing businesses such as Uber and Lyft are one of the most popular side hustles, and for good reason. As a driver, you can set your own schedule and work as much or as little as you want. You don’t even have to look for customers – the app will notify you when someone near you needs a ride.
Drivers are paid based on what the demand for drivers is at the time. For instance, during highly busy periods, such as Friday or Saturday night, drivers can earn a premium since there is such a demand for their services. Based on data from Glassdoor, Uber drivers on average make $14 per hour while Lyft drivers make $15 an hour on average.
2) Sell on a Selling App
Have a bunch of stuff laying around your home that you no longer need or use? Well, it’s never been an easier time to sell your belongings, thanks to apps that can help you with the process.
With apps like OfferUp, you simply have to post pictures of your for-sale items. The app let you message with potential buyers directly, so you don’t have to give out your personal contact information if you don’t want to. Best of all, it allows buyers and sellers to rate one another, so you can ensure you’re always dealing with a safe and responsible person.
3) Rent Out Your Vehicle
Did you know you can now earn money by renting out your car? Instead of paying for an expensive rental car, travelers are turning to individuals to find a more affordable ride.
Turo is an app that allows you to list your car for rent. The company will pay for insurance coverage for your car and your customers while it is being used, so you don’t have to worry.
How much you earn depends on the make and model of your car, demand in your area, and how long you rent it out. They have a calculator on their website to show you how much you can make every year depending on your situation, so check it out!
4) Deliver Packages
Want to earn $18-25 per hour on your own time? Then check out Amazon Flex.
With Amazon Flex, you act as a part-time delivery person. Once you sign up and download their app, you block off hour-long periods of time when you can deliver packages to customers. They are flexible with hours, and need packages delivered at all times of the day, making this one great side hustle.
5) Deliver Food
You know that feeling when you are craving a certain meal from a restaurant, but don’t want to leave the house to go get it? Postmates has solved that problem for its clients, and you can earn money by working with them.
With Postmates, customers order food from their favorite restaurants, and you act as the courier to get it to them. You’ll go into the restaurant, pick up the food, and drive it to its final destination.
Postmates is growing in popularity, but it is still mostly just in larger cities. Other apps, like Uber Eats and Door Dash act in a similar manner, so check it out to see what’s available in your city.
6) Go Grocery Shopping
It seems like people either love or hate to go grocery shopping. But if you happen to enjoy shopping for groceries, then you could earn money by doing so.
Through an app called Instacart, you can sign up to become a driver and/or a shopper. Once you sign up, you will set your schedule and automatically receive notifications about your next assignment. You will be issued an Instacart credit card and will drive to the grocery store, pick up the items on the buyer’s list, and drop them off to the buyer. Instacart shoppers can expect to earn $10 to $20 per hour, and must have their own car in order to get started.
7) Do Handy-Work
If you love cleaning or general handy work, you can use the app Handy to find work near you.
Handy connects professional handymen and women with clients in the same area. Handy is somewhat unique in that they require their handy team to have previous paid experience. Since it requires prior experience, the pay is quite a bit higher than most other apps. House cleaners can earn upwards of $22 an hour and handy men or women can earn up to $45 an hour.
Before you dive right in, you should know that as a contractor, you are requires to bring your own supplies, such as cleaning supplies if you are a cleaner or tools if you are doing handy-work.

Who knew you could rent out your car?! My husband loved Uber, and the app was pretty easy to use. But I don’t know how much I would trust other people driving the car, even with insurance lol.

It’s amazing to learn about all of these new apps – so many didn’t even make the list because it would have been too long!
